Childs Aesthetic Brown Transferware Biscuit Jar
PUNCH AND JUDY
Charles Allerton & Sons Staffordshire England c. 1890
This is a wonderful child's transferware covered biscuit jar or sugar jar. , circa 1890. Originally part of a complete children's tea service, the round, melon shaped lidded jar stands about 4 1/2" tall with a scalloped rim and applied handles. The decoration is a transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown. The piece depicts the Punch and Judy with Baby on both sides with the side kick "frog". Handles and trim are in a floral design. It is marked with the maker Charles Allerton & Sons, England on the bottom.
CONDITION: Haphazardly made in a traditional folk art style, not fine china and not made to be -- the Jar has typical light wear here and there, a few light Flea Bites on the inside lid, very small, but you can feel it with your finger. NO CRACKS and fine overall light CRAZING here and there. A great example of naive and whimsical early wares, Offered as is., please look at pictures before deciding to purchase.
Children's aesthetic transferware in this fun pattern is highly sought after, and animal lovers love it.
